An Institute for Science and Human Values Workshop on
raising ethical, happy children in our society.
Program
Friday and Saturday; May 20-21, 2011
Our sessions have been planned specifically for each of three
audiences: educators, parents and young people. For
educators, the focus will be on presenting specific
methods and practices that can be implemented in schools
to help students develop healthy values and morals, AND
which will be acceptable to school authorities and
school boards of education. Each workshop will deal with
the following:
-
Why has values education been a failure or no-show in public schools
historically?
-
What needs to be done to overcome the identified problems and obstacles?
-
How can specific methods not only achieve our desired objectives, but
also result in higher learning levels as well?
For parents, the focus will be on widening understanding and increasing
skill levels in this challenging area. The key parts of
these workshops will include:
-
The DO’s and Don’t’s of effective parenting for healthy values
development.
-
The importance of modeling good values
-
The uniqueness of the secular household and its role in values
development; both the upside AND downside.
For the young people in attendance, a major road to values development
is through their decision making. This workshop will
include some of the following:
-
How good a decision-maker are you?
-
When are you good and when are you not?
-
How do values and morals affect decision-making?
-
What do you value?
-
Do your decisions and behavior reflect your values?
-
A healthy decision-making process will be presented.
Each of the above workshops will feature a question & answer segment so
that everyone’s concerns can be addressed. It is the
primary objective that each participant will take from
this conference valuable ideas and methods that will
make them far more confident and effective in
stimulating young people to develop healthy morals and
values.
